Rioja is the most famous and most productive wine region of Spain. There are over 500 wineries and 140,000 acres of vineyards and most of those are Tempranillo vines. Other red varietals are Garnacha, Mazuelo (Carignane in other parts of Spain) and a smattering of other red grapes. In addition to red varietals, there are also white grapes grown in Rioja. 1.Horizonte de Exopto Blanco – $21.99- The Wildcard!
92p Robert Parker
Exopto is a word that derives from latin, meaning “to desire with strength”. Well-rounded on the palate and pleasant acidity. Structured and complex, ending with a perfumed and intense finish.
2.Ah-So Rose (by Artadi) – $19.99, 4-pack 250 ml cans- Silvia’s Favorite!
As Spain’s first estate grown, organic canned rosé, Ah-So comes from the celebrated Lopez de LaCalle Artazu property. The wine is sourced from local clones – 100% Garnacha – in a rosé-specific, high-altitude vineyard (400-500 meters), which features clay and limestone soils, that the family has been farming since 1996.
3.Luberri “Orlegi” Tinto – $14.99
Orlegi is a return to the traditional light, fruit-forward wines of Rioja Alavesa. Utilizing whole-cluster fermentation for some of the grapes and indigenous yeasts, this is a classic, young Tempranillo from Rioja for everyday drinking.
4.Bhilar Tinto – $16.99
90 p The Wine Advocate
“Mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha and Viura from vineyards ranging between 15 and 45 years of age. The oak is well integrated and neatly folded into the fruit, which is ripe (without excess), reflecting a warm and ripe year, nicely balanced with some peachy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals fine-grained tannins. Very pleasant.”
5.Artadi “Vinas de Gain”Tinto – $29.99
93 p Decanter, 92 p Robert Parker
Just Tempranillo, organic viticulture, a blend of village plots. This has all the polish and expertise that goes into Artadi’s single vineyards, and it’s more accessibly priced. It’s dense, with dark stone fruit and firm, fine tannin.
Wines will be accompanied by a selection of cheeses, crackers, canapes, artisan breads &olive oil. The cost for one flight (a sample of each of the wines) will be $15.
