While some saw 1997 as California’s “Vintage of the Century”, others saw it as the end of an era.
The early fervor over the vintage and its super-ripe, flashy wines
marked a sea change for California Wine.
Post-1997, the structured and age-worthy wines which initially brought fame
to California were largely pushed aside in favor of high-octane wines
with huge price tags and dubious futures.
While time has shown the quality of the 1997 wines to be inconsistent at best,
the effects of the vintage’s early hype have been powerful and long-lasting.
