We’re grateful to Columbus Business First for recently sitting down with our owner, Kamal Boulos, to reflect on The Refectory’s nearly five decades in Columbus — and the journey that has shaped us along the way.

The article traces the path from our beginnings in 1976 — when the restaurant operated under the name Olde Church-House — through Kamal’s early days as an employee in 1977, manager in 1978, and eventual owner in 1991. What emerges is not just a timeline of milestones, but a story of persistence, mentorship, and community.

From negotiating vendor debt in the early years, to weathering economic downturns in 2008, to adapting during the Covid pandemic, The Refectory’s longevity has never been accidental. It has been built on choices — choices to prioritize relationships, to reinvest in excellence, and to serve the community even during challenging times.

As Kamal shared in the interview:

“Fine dining is about connecting with the people you’re with. As you look back on your life, you will have memories of places you’ve been and the people you’ve shared experiences with. A lot of those memories are going to be around a table.”

The feature also highlights the pivotal moments that shaped our evolution — earning Wine Spectator’s Grand Award in 1991, welcoming Chef Richard Blondin in 1992, expanding our wine cellar, and deepening our commitment to nonprofit partnerships throughout Central Ohio.

Perhaps most meaningful is the reminder that our greatest achievements are not awards or accolades, but the relationships built with guests, associates, mentors, and community partners over the years.

As we approach our 50th Anniversary in 2026, we are humbled by the story that continues to unfold — and deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of it.
