For half a century, we’ve believed that a truly great restaurant isn’t measured by any single dish. It’s the sum of everything — the first warm greeting at the door, the bottle a sommelier pulls just for you, the sauce finished moments before it reaches your table, the room that makes an ordinary Tuesday feel like an occasion. That philosophy is precisely what the DiRoNA Award was created to recognize.
What Is the DiRoNA Award?
DiRoNA stands for Distinguished Restaurants of North America. Established in 1990 — evolving from the storied Travel Holiday Dining Awards that recognized top restaurants for more than three decades before it — DiRoNA has become a benchmark for exceptional dining across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
What sets it apart is how a restaurant earns it. This isn’t a popularity contest or a reader poll. Every candidate undergoes a rigorous, independent evaluation conducted by anonymous inspectors who assess the complete experience against exacting standards: culinary mastery, a thoughtful and expertly curated beverage program, impeccable and attentive service, and an ambiance that elevates every moment. Only the restaurants that excel across all of these dimensions earn the right to display the award’s brushed-aluminum plaque in their dining room.
In other words, it recognizes exactly the kind of restaurant we’ve spent fifty years striving to be.

Fifty Years, and Still Setting the Table
When The Refectory opened its doors in a restored 1853 church in 1976, fine dining in Columbus looked very different than it does today. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to the details — the belief that hospitality is a craft worth perfecting, meal after meal, year after year.
Our award-winning wine cellar, now more than 700 selections deep, continues to earn national recognition. Our kitchen, under Executive Chef Richard Blondin, still treats French technique as a living tradition rather than a museum piece. And our team still greets every guest with the conviction that this night — your night — deserves to be extraordinary.
